First autocross and an Evo school coming up

Well its finally that time of year again. On the 3rd of may there is an evolution driving school and Sunday the 4 th is an autocross.

As the car goes, I have the shocks in, the ecu installed,  a rear spoiler that is 80% complete at this point. the spoiler will be complete tomorrow and a front lip will be installed tomorrow as well.

Sadly I have not been able to get the limited slip installed yet. It might have to wait till I can afford to take it to a shop.

I have the new tires mounted and ready to go as well.

If anyone has experience with a measure ecu and would be willing to help me out with some issues I am having. Please leave a comment here and let me know.

I'm seeing lots of hesitation when you first tap the gas pedal.  It also barely keeps running when you first start it up but if you give it gas for 10 seconds or so it runs ok.

  1. It could be quite a few different things. I don't know what you've tried yet, but will offer some suggestions.

The fuel and timing tables that come with the MS unit initially are just basic safe settings so that you can get your car to start. Typically they'll make your car run the same or worse than the stock ECU, until you've tuned it.

I know you mentioned that you purchased Tuner Studio and that's what I use. Before I go into a long list of things to check, have you got Tuner Studio running on a computer and recognizing your Megasquirt?

I'm guessing you need to tune your fuel table to your car. It could also be the Warmup Enrichment settings (WUE) which operate when you first startup the car until it reaches a certain operating temperature.

I won't make it to Helena this weekend, but plan on being at the May 17th / 18th races in Helena. If we can't get things figured out online by then, I'd be happy to go over my setup with you and take a look at yours to try to get things running better.

First, do you have Tuner Studio running and connecting with the MS ECU? If so, did you do the initial timing setup and sensor setups?

  2. Spoiler - what material and thickness did you use? Where did you buy it? After using it this weekend, let me know if you think it was thick enough or if anyone noticed it flexing too much?

  3. I do have the initial setup done for the sensors and what not.

The spoiler is plexiglass from home Depot .220" thick. There is no real flexing under heavy load even at 80+ mph.

  4. Have you physically attached a computer to the MSPNP and had Tuner Studio recognize it? (I'm guessing it has either a serial port or usb.)

  5. Yes, tuner studio recognizes it correctly.

  6. Did you set the Base Ignition Timing using a timing gun on spark plug wire #1?

If you've got a laptop connected to the MSPNP while you drive around, you should be able to use the Auto-tune feature in Tuner Studio to tune the fuel maps to desired AFR figures. You should also be able to Auto-tune the WUE (warmup enrichment), although that is a new feature they added over the winter that I haven't played with yet.

With a laptop hooked up, you should also be able to "log" your data using Tuner Studio, to be analyzed later in Megalogviewer. That's how I found out I was having problems with it not receiving good cam & crank sensor signals on mine.

If using Windows, your Tuner Studio project files are usually in My Documents/TunerStudioProjects/... If you want me to glance over your setup in Tuner Studio, you could email me a copy of your .msq file. If you're able to capture logs, you could email those also. (nathan@406racing.com)

Have you been able to use the auto-tune function while driving around yet? If so, does it seem to be working and changing fuel settings?

  7. Nathan, sorry I went silent on you. Things got way to busy.

Anyway, I was finally able to spend some time tuning the ecu today properly. It's doing better but I may bug you this weekend if you are up to it to figure out a few smaller issues

  8. Sorry I didn't get more time to go over MS with you at the race. We were understaffed again and I was one of only 2 people that knew how to run the computer, so ended up working every time I wasn't racing.

I uploaded an archive copy of my complete project / tune from TunerStudio to: http://406racing.com/n8.tsproj

I'm using TunerStudio 2.6.01. If you're running the same version, you can download the file and check the settings against yours to see if anything sticks out. TunerStudio / File / Import Archive Project.

Some of the settings may not be applicable due to differences in setup ('99 with supercharger). I'd suggest looking at the timing table and AFR table to see if there are many differences.

I'm sure this goes without saying, but don't try flashing my tune directly to your ecu. (Different model ecu, different year cars, etc.)
